Temporary Closure Area: Pierce County Islands State Wildlife Area
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has temporarily closed approximately 125 acres within Pierce County Islands State Wildlife Area while habitat restoration work is underway. The closure is expected to remain in place until construction is completed in 2027.

What Area Is Closed?
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has temporarily closed approximately 125 acres within Pierce County Islands State Wildlife Area, including newly constructed islands, the southern portion of the wildlife area, and access through Catherine's Pass.
How Long Will the Closure Be in Effect?
The closure is effective immediately (May 2026) and is expected to remain in place through September 2027. The area will remain closed while habitat restoration work is completed.
Why Is the Area Closed?
According to Wisconsin DNR, the temporary closure protects public safety during active construction and allows newly constructed habitat features to stabilize.
What Work Is Being Completed?
Wisconsin DNR and project partners are restoring habitat through island construction, shoreline stabilization, habitat dredging, and the creation of mudflats and backwater habitat designed to benefit fish, waterfowl, and other wildlife.
What Happens After Construction?
Wisconsin DNR states that when construction is complete and the temporary closure is lifted, Catherine's Pass will become a permanent slow-no-wake area to help protect newly restored habitat and improve boater safety.
